Björkliden's history

In 1902 the railway between Kiruna and Narvik was finished, which meant that the isolation was broken and the magnificent beauty of the landscape was discovered and eventually the tourists began to arrive.
From 1926 Gammelgården was used as a mountain resort facility by SJS by agreement from the Swedish railway company SJ. In 1938 the parliament granted a total of 190 000 SEK to SJ and a year later they could open Hotell Fjället and Låktatjåkko Mountain Lodge.
During the war the military disposed all mountain resort facilities. Thereafter continued the development and the building of the first T-bar lift that was 1000 meters long and had a capacity of 250 persons/hour was completed.
Hotell Fjället burned down in December 1967, probably due to electrical fault. By 1974 a new hotel was built and new lifts were added. Kåppas Cabin Village, with 80 cabins, was built 1971-73 and a grocery store was established at the station building.
Björkliden developed a lot with new lifts and reconstruction of the hotel during the 1900s last decade.

In 2005 the mountain resort was sold by SJS to Visionalis AB and the resort is now called Björkliden Mountain Resort. Since the new owners took over, the cabins and Restaurant Lapporten has been renovated and the new log cabins Solhyllan have been added.
In 2010 the Swedish Championship in alpine skiing was held here, which shows that the downhill skiing in Björkliden is excellent.
Since July 2011 Björkliden Mountain Resort and Riksgränsen has the same owner, and the company that operates these facilities is called Lapland Resorts.
